How SLINGGUARD Began
I’m Elaine Healy, and I designed the original SLINGGUARD Car Seat Protector in 2009 after every cover I bought for my dogs broke. Because it was created purely for my own use — not for sale — I chose only the highest‑quality materials to ensure true durability.
Living in Ocean Grove, Victoria, I needed a cover strong enough to handle my two lively Border Collies, Missy and Beau, plus the extra dogs who often joined us on our daily beach trips. It also had to withstand long drives to Melbourne and all around Victoria.
Designed for Real Life
I built SLINGGUARD to be versatile, reversible, and genuinely practical:
- One side is 100% waterproof for wet, muddy, and sandy mornings.
- The other side is luxuriously soft for long, comfortable trips.
- A thick middle layer prevents twisting and adds extra comfort.
Because I live with Rheumatoid Arthritis, it also had to be easy to install and remove, simple to wipe clean by hand, and fully machine washable.
More Than a Dog Seat Cover
I soon realised it wasn’t just for my dogs — it was for my life. During home renovations, it became a true car protector, strong enough to carry brick pavers and building materials. I designed it to fit both the back seat and the rear cargo area of our station wagon at the time, and now our SUV.
With grandchildren in the family, it also needed to work with car seats, and it even doubled as a ground sheet when needed for beach trips or camping.
From Personal Solution to Trusted Brand
After eight years of continuous use, I realised nothing on the market matched the quality of my original SLINGGUARD. So in 2018, I came out of retirement to share it with dog owners across Australia — and now thousands of dogs and their humans rely on it every day.
Expanding the Range With the Same Standards
As time went on, I saw the need for strong, 2in1 reinforced car‑safe/walking harnesses — as opposed to ordinary walking harnesses, which can be dangerous in vehicles. That led to designing car safety leads, then leashes and collars, all built to the same uncompromising standard.
When Zorro, my Bordoodle, joined the family, I created a single‑seat SLINGGUARD so he could travel separately when needed.
A Small Australian Family Business
I love designing products that make travelling with dogs safer, easier, and more enjoyable. There will always be new additions to the SLINGGUARD range — each one created with the same care, thought, and real‑world dog testing that started it all.
